Thymol blue (thymolsulphonephthalein) is a brownish-green or reddish-brown crystalline powder that is used as a pH indicator. It is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and dilute alkali solutions.
It transitions from red to yellow at pH 1.2–2.8 and from yellow to blue at pH 8.0–9.6. It is usually a component of Universal indicator.

1.Acid-base indicator, pH1.2 (red) to 2.8 (yellow), 8 (yellow) to 9.6 (blue).
2.Anionic surfactant indicator turns red purple when anionic surfactants appear under acidic conditions.
3.The mixture of thymol blue, cresol red, ethanol, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride can be used as a bicarbonate indicator to identify the presence of carbon dioxide.
